Poll: 79% of Americans think US economy may collapse – Easy steps to be prepared.
Stockpile food. If you are able keep a few months non-perishables handy do it. 6 months is probably better. It only takes a few days for the grocery shelves to get emptied in a crisis. Eventually food will return but prices will be very high.
Store drinking water and prepare to treat contaminated water. A gallon a day per person is recommended. If the water supply goes down it will be one of the first utilities to be restored but there might be a considerable time lag. Store as much as you can and remember that you probably have 30 gallons or more in your hot water tank. Think about how you can get more if needed (rain barrels, local ponds, streams, etc.). New water may be contaminated for some time so keep ways to sterilize it handy. There are many great sites available on how to make water safe for drinking.
Prepare for increased security until order is restored. Remember that the police run away if there is even minor looting as in the L. A. King riots or Katrina floods. Looters stop when they meet resistance. Consider banding together with neighbors now to form a neighborhood protective association.
Store gasoline if you can do it safely and keep ½ your vehicle’s gas tank full at all times. Energy will be at a premium for a long time. Think about all that is involved in importing oil, refining it into a usable source and the shipping it to where you can purchase it.
Keep a few months expenses in cash handy if you can do it safely. "Bank Holidays" will probably be mandated as in the past (banks will close to prevent people from withdrawing their money). Banks likely will limit the amount of money that can be withdrawn at all. You don’t want to lose your car or home if your money if severely restricted. Remember that interest rates are pathetically low now so lost interest is negligible (plus that small return is taxable so you don’t even get to keep all of that).
Medications - Stock up as much as you are able. Get extra if you are able and keep them safe and handy.
Make an emergency spot and keep things like a radio, flashlight, candles, tooks, tape, etc. quickly accessable. The "LInks" page above will contain an emergency list developed by the US Government.
Prepare Today! It isn’t fair to be warned and then expect your neighbors to share their emergency supplies. Many more valuable resources are linked above or at www.BankruptUSA.com. |
